The
six-piece band Lansbury (from the city of Gijón)
offers an addictive mix of lo-fi-folk, slow pop,
neo-country, post-what-ever-you-want and
...rock. The intensity of their work lies hidden
underneath the apparent sobriety of the ambients
they create. Lansbury wants to hit where it
hurts and to console at the same time.
The
lyrics by singer Javier Otero are drowned in
sadness: they're about feeling lonely, drugged,
fucked up. Like in the case of Arab Strap, the
stories mainly take place at night. In full
detail. Otero sings about love in all its forms.
From love that hurts to love that makes you want
to scream of euphoria. Some comparisons made by
the press: Red House Painters, The Smiths, Giant
Sand, Curtis Mayfield, Pulp, Mary Margareth
O'hara, Will Oldham, Tindersticks, Smog,
Lambchop, Mogwai.
In
2001, Lansbury won different demo contests, such
as Proyecto Demo 2001, organized by Spanish
national radio (Radio 3/RNE) and the
internationally known festival FIB. The result
of these first brave steps on the Spanish
national music scene was to be heard on the
first EP The Only Thing That Shines (Astro
2001). The
new album That Creepy Hope On Love was recorded
in Oviedo and has received wide acclaim in
Spain. Guest appearances include a.o. that of
Nacho Álvarez (of Manta Ray-fame and declared
fan of Lansbury).
